The design is inspired by the cover of the 2012 comic book Superman Annual #1. The reverse image depicts the "New 52" universe version of Superman as though he is bursting to life from the coin's surface, with flashes of lightning around him. The use of different finishes and expert engraving gives the image a dynamic sense of motion.
