Where earlier records with the band spread out into long solos, this one runs on repetition: "T Bone" spends nine minutes on two lines of lyrics, and "Shots" ends in bursts of guitar and synthesizer. In between sit the rolling "Southern Pacific", about a railway man put out to pasture, and the jittery "Opera Star". Young worked on the album around the intensive therapy programme
